From February 16thtill the 19th, Mr. Hekmat Karzai, Director of CAPS visited Brussels on the invitation of the European Parliament and East West Institute, which is one of the leading think tanks in Europe. The objective of the visit was to participate in two different events and hold meetings with various officials and dignitaries.

On February 16th, Mr.Karzai attended a one day close door session at the European Parliament on Afghanistan titled:  ‘Alternative Futures for Afghanistan and the Stability of South west Asia.  During his address, Mr. Karzai highlighted the role of Europe in the political and development process of Afghanistan and the key challenges they face in 2009.

Mr. Karzai also participated in the East West Institute’s Sixth World wide Security Conference titled, ‘From theGlobal War on Terror to Common Security and Joint Action.’  During the two day event, Mr. Karzai chaireda panel title: National Secrets: Over coming Barriers to International Cooperation in the Fight Against Terrorism and Organized Crime; spoke at two different panels a) Tactics of Radicalization: How Terrorist recruit and b)Next Steps on Afghanistan where the key themes and deliberations of the Afghanistan conference was shared with the participants.

Several side meetings and interviews were also held on the side line of the conference including a meeting with H.E. Zia Nizam, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Belgium.
