On 18February 2021, Mr. Hekmat Khalil Karzai hosted HE Ole Andreas Lindeman for a luncheon to discuss the security situation in Afghanistan and development in the Afghan peace process. The two sides discussed the scheduled withdrawal of all US and NATO troops by 1 May 2021 and possible extension of this deadline. Ambassador Lindeman and Mr. Karzai discussed Taliban’s recent visit to Moscow and Iran. Mr. Karzai said that Moscow has told Taliban that Doha process appears to be dead and thus has offered the start of Moscow Format. Mr. Karzai also talked about the possible peace dialogue in Turkey. In addition to exchanging notes on peace and security, Amb Lindeman expressed his interest to visit Puli Charkhi prison to see the facility in person. CAPS and Amb Lindeman agreed that treatment of detainees remain an important factor that can influence overall peace process.
