Located in Kabul, Afghanistan, CAPS is an independent, research centre that strives to conduct action-oriented research which will influence policy-makers. It works diligently towards building local capacity to produce conflict and threat assessments that will influence the safety and security of the people serving the governments, and international aid organizations.

Vacancy Announcement: Senior Research Analyst

Position: Senior Research Analyst

Duration: 1 year, renewable (three months probation)

Responsibilities: Include but are not limited to:

Research: 65%

*  Project design and implementation, including field coordination, assessment of data quality, and data management

*  Analysis and report writing

*  Conduct empirical, field-based and secondary research on various issues affecting Afghanistan

*  Present CAPS activities and research projects when requested by donors, other organizations, government institutions or media outlets

*  Travel to provinces to participate in and lead data collection

  Management: 20%

*  Assist management in strategic direction and day-to-day oversight of the department

*  Assist in the recruitment, training, and mentoring of Interns, Researchers, and Analysts

*  Edit, proofread and direct quality control efforts on all CAPS research products in accordance with internal and external deadlines

*  Where necessary, assist in oversight of Youth Peace Movement and Empowerment Centre programming

  Program Development: 15%

*  Program development, including proposal writing, donor liaisons, and achievement of overall funding goals

*  Draft, edit and submit all requisite project reports in line with donor policies

*  Social Media management & generation of Web Content



*  Master’s degree in social sciences; security studies, political science, international relations, international development, law, economics, business, communication or other relevant disciplines.

*  3-5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in quantitative and qualitative social science research, particularly political and security research and analysis. Other relevant experiences are policy analysis, teaching/training, advocacy and writing.

*  Native or near-native spoken and written English skills

*  Experience in drafting high quality analytical products, assessments and reports

*  Strong understanding of issues facing Afghan security, transition, political institutions and development

*  Willingness to travel outside of Kabul (Travel is limited, but necessary for most projects)


*  Proven track record fundraising through project grants

*  Fluency in Pashtu and Dari languages

*  Experience with technical analytical software such as SPSS and ArcGIS

*  Fluency in applied statistics


*  Strong critical thinking skills

*  Sense of humour
